The Oxfordshire village of Eynsham is located just 5 miles north-west of the City of Oxford and about the same distance east of Witney. There is evidence that a settlement existed in the area as early as the Bronze Age, and in 864 it was known as Egenes Homme when it is thought to have had its own Minster. In the middle of the 19th century the village held its own races on Thursday 26th March 1857, although the meeting appears to have been a one-off.
